All about Election Champion - the billboard-hunting game

What was Election Champion?

Election Champion ran from March to May 2010. It was a project to monitor election billboards, and also a game.

What were the game's rules?

Pretty straightforward - to win the game on May 6th, you needed to upload the most pictures of election billboards around the UK. See the winners.

What did users get in return?

A Cabinet position and a chance to win the game!

We also told you a bit about the local constituency - the incumbent's name, party, majority and swing needed to vote them out, so you knew whether the billboard was in a hard-fought marginal or a safe seat.

Why bother collecting billboards?

We wanted to build up a picture of how the parties spent their advertising cash across the UK, and also create an archive of election billboards (much as the brilliant Straight Choice does for UK election leaflets), to join our Flickr group.

Can I reproduce any of your photos?

Yes, feel free - please just say where you got it from (with a link if possible).

Where did you get your constituency information?

From TheyWorkForYou. Stats were based on the 2005 electoral boundaries.

What do you mean by a billboard? Did a lamp-post poster count?

We were looking for full-size election billboards, advertising a national political party or campaign around the election (so, not local candidate posters).

Was the project affiliated to or supported by any political party?

No.

Can I get your source code?

It will shortly be uploaded to GitHub under an open source licence. Get in touch if you'd like it sooner.

Who are you, and how can I get in touch?

Election Champion is developed by Darkgreener for 4iP. Please contact Anna with any bugs, comments or suggestions.
